How Do You Choosing the Right Flammable Safety Cabinet?

Jun. 08, 2021

Each liquid causes its own special kind of damage, but only flammables can turn your plant into a scene from a 1970s disaster movie. That's why flammables hold a special place in the regulatory arena. Just look at the Uniform Fire Code, OSHA or the International Fire Code and you'll see what we're talking about.

But no matter what codes you study, they all boil down to the same thing: The safest way to store flammable liquids is in approved containers inside flammable safety cabinets that meet all the codes we just mentioned. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.106(d)(3)(i&ii) outlines the details of cabinet design requirements, but we've summarized the top six here.

1. Determine the cabinet's purpose

Outdoor storage buildings are great for storing large quantities of flammable liquids, but cabinets can help you store small amounts of liquids in locations close to where you'll be using them. You'll find countertop, wall-mounted, undercounter and other storage cabinets ranging in size from 4 gallons to 120 gallons.

2.Ensure cabinets meet OSHA and NFPA 30 construction and design requirements

Having an independent third-party certification such as Factory Mutual Global (FM) or Underwriters Laboratory (UL) will also ensure the cabinet passes rigorous testing.

3. Determine what category your fluids belong to

OSHA allows 60 gallons of Class I and II (Classes 1, 2, 3) or 120 gallons of Class III (Class 4) liquids to be stored in a single flammable liquid storage cabinet.

4. Check local requirements

Find out if your state and county require you to have cabinets with self-closing doors or if manual doors are acceptable. You will also need to contact your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) to find out how small flammable storage cabinet are placed and how many they are allowed in a given location.

Choosing a cabinet to store flammable materials is a big deal. By completing these steps, you will be able to make an informed decision and ensure your workers are safe and on time.
