Safety When Using Lab Faucets And Valves
Jun. 23, 2021
The most important safety rule is to turn off lab faucets and lab valves immediately if someone is not using them. Never leave laboratory valves, especially laboratory gas valve and steam valve, open for too long. Certain gases can cause health problems if released into the air. You should never assume that your safety hood can control gases. Vapor, on the other hand, poses a risk because it can burn anyone who encounters a laboratory valve that is not closed.
You should also perform safety checks to ensure that your lab valves are working properly. You should test them at least once a week to make sure they are only expelling the amount of liquid you want. If they show signs of wear, decay or inaccuracy, replace them immediately.
Laboratory Gas Valve
Keep your valves and faucets away from anything that could damage them. Shocks that cause damage to valves can lead to gas or vapor leaks, which can lead to health risks. You should use acoustic and specialized sensors to test for leaks. Valve leaks increase over time due to corrosion of the valve seals, so any leak detected, no matter how small, should cause you to close the valve and replace it.
You should also make sure that only authorized personnel are allowed to use the valves in your laboratory. You can learn more by checking out a recent article we wrote: Which Lab Valves Do You Need?
Post a sign next to each laboratory gas valves or laboratory water valves explaining what the laboratory valve controls are and the possible safety risks. You should also have information about each substance you use in your laboratory that is organized and accessible to everyone who uses the valve. This step will help anyone who is exposed to gases and vapors.
If any lab valves fail, you should have proper ventilation in all labs to limit the buildup of gases and vapors. You should also purchase valves only from trusted suppliers. Buying discounted valves can cause problems because these valves are often reused or repurposed. Purchase new valves only from companies that specialize in high-quality fixtures and equipment.
